The Importance of the Istanbul Convention
Opened for signature in Istanbul in 2011, the Council of Europe Convention is built on four pillars: prevention, protection, prosecution and coordinated policies. Turkey was the first country to sign and ratify it.
The Convention is based on education, awareness and media work for prevention; shelters, counselling centres and free legal support for protection; and judicial processes for effective punishment of perpetrators.
